Tjalling Halbertsma

Photographer

Tjalling Halbertsma was born and raised in the Netherlands. Until his 30s, he explored art and film school and owned a business in water filtration. Following those years, Tjalling and his family moved to the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten. There, he and his wife operated a successful business specializing in the design, supply, and installation of high-end building components and interior solutions, ranging from residential to large-scale commercial developments. In the winter of 2015, the family moved to Canada and made a complete change of life. In this new adventure, Tjalling returned to his roots as a filmmaker by taking up the camera. This sparked a burst of inspiration, allowing him to tell his stories while discovering this fascinating form of art. Since he is passionate about many subjects, he works across multiple areas of photography, which is why you can find so many different subjects and styles on his website: portraits, athletes, music, colours, nature, and his personal journey. His favourite projects focus on visual stories and events such as the Collingwood Music Festival, Ski Cross World Championships, and the Heineken Regatta in St. Maarten. His work has earned several honours, including the S1 Group & District 28 Award of Excellence, the Red Cardinal Award, the Extreme Imaging DPAI Award, and selection as a finalist for both the Salt Spring National Art Prize and the CAPIC Xposé in Toronto.
