ORCHESTRA

The National Academy Orchestra of Canada (NAO) provides an extraordinary opportunity for emerging young Canadian professional musicians to work as apprentice musicians alongside established professionals from some of Canada’s finest orchestras.

The NAO was founded in 1989 by conductor Boris Brott and is primarily based in Hamilton, Ontario. It is recognized as a Canadian National School for professional training, and each winter over 450 potential applicants audition from across Canada for a position in the orchestra.

Since its inception, the NAO has been the orchestra-in-residence for the acclaimed Brott Music Festival, Canada’s largest orchestral music festival. Each season features guest concertmasters and mentors from across the country, guest conductors, and internationally-renowned soloists, with performance opportunities ranging from full orchestra, to opera, and chamber.

Jeremy Dutcher

Jeremy Dutcher

Jeremy Dutcher

SINGER

Performer, composer, activist, musicologist — these roles are all infused into his art and way of life. His music, too, transcends boundaries: unapologetically playful in its incorporation of classical influences, full of reverence for the traditional songs of his home, and teeming with the urgency of modern-day struggles of resistance.

A member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Jeremy first did music studies in Halifax before taking a chance to work in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History, painstakingly transcribing Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders. “Many of the songs I’d never heard before, because our musical tradition on the East Coast was suppressed by the Canadian Government’s Indian Act.” Jeremy heard ancestral voices singing forgotten songs and stories that had been taken from the Wolastoqiyik generations ago.

As he listened to each recording, he felt his own musical impulses stirring from deep within. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano, feeling out melodies and phrases, deep in dialogue with the voices of his ancestors. These “collaborative”compositions, collected together on his debut LP Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, are like nothing you’ve ever heard. Delicate, sublime vocal melodies ring out atop piano lines that cascade through a vibrant range of emotions. The anguish and joy of the past erupt fervently into the present through Jeremy’s bold approach to composition and raw, affective performances enhanced by his outstanding tenor techniques.

“I’m doing this work because there’s only about a hundred Wolastoqey speakers left,” he says. “It’s crucial for us to make sure that we’re using our language and passing it on to the next generation. If you lose the language, you’re not just losing words; you’re losing an entire way of seeing and experiencing the world from a distinctly indigenous perspective.”

Eric Cadesky

INSTRUMENT MAKER

Eric Cadesky has been fascinated by musical instruments and taking them apart since he was young. Eventually he learned how to put most of them back together. In doing so discovered his passion for designing and building non-traditional music instruments. For the past 43 years he has been building instruments made of glass for the Glass Orchestra, a quartet who have performed locally and around the globe. He is a composer for film, tv, modern dance and ballet and his music has been nominated for numerous awards, recently receiving Best Music Award for his score for the dance film Bears, Stars and Trees. He believes in giving back to the community through workshops, residencies and mentoring. He is very happy to be working with the wonderful team of the Collingwood Music Festival!

Dévah Quartet

ENSEMBLE

Dévah Members:
Liza McLellan – Cello, Electric Cello, Writer, Arranger, Vocals
Emily Hau – Violin, Electric Violin, Vocals
Sharon Lee – Violin, Viola, Electric 5-string Violin/Viola, Vocals
Moira Burke – Viola, Violin, Electric 5-string Violin/Viola, Vocals
Mackenzie Longpre / Kristofer Maddigan – Drums

Dévah recently released their third album Prometheus, just on the heels of their second
album 2112, which features a full length instrumental tribute to Canadian icon RUSH’s suite
of the same name. Prometheus has been featured in various Prog Rock journals and
podcasts, and 2112 was featured in the UK magazine PROG (Dévah’s second write up in this
publication). Dévah’s tribute to Rush’s 2112 led to being invited to perform at A Night for
Neil, the tribute event held for Rush drummer Neil Peart.

A multi-genre (note: not cross-genre) string quartet, Dévah has held residencies at the
University of Toronto’s New Music Festival performing works on both acoustic and electric
instruments, and at San Jacinto College in Texas as visiting artists, where they provide
masterclasses and composer workshops with both sets of instruments.

Dévah’s notable performances include Canada Day at Yonge and Dundas Square (twice),
the countdown launch for the Pan Am Games, The 2022 Canada Games, and featured guest
artists at Interprovincial Music Camp’s CAMP ROCK. When in electric mode, Dévah
performs high energy sets with effects pedals and wireless cables, enabling them to
encourage interaction with the audience through movement. Dévah Quartet’s shows are
often performed by memory and backed by a drummer, and at times accompanied by a
projection artist.

No stranger to multi-disciplinary collaboration, Dévah has performed live with dancers,
including Toronto’s A2D2 Aerial Dancers, and a special collaboration with ballet dancers for
the Kubrick: A Clockwork Orange installation party for the Toronto International Film
Festival.

Classically trained, Dévah Quartet’s members are active principal players in Toronto-based
ensembles. Violinist Sharon Lee is Concertmaster of Toronto Concert Orchestra, violinist
Emily Hau is Principal Second of Sinfonia Toronto, cellist Liza McLellan was cellist of
Quartetto Gelato for nine years, violist Moira Burke plays for Mirvish productions.
Dévah became Yamaha Canada Artists in 2011, and D’Addario Canada Artists in 2013.
