Aptly pegged “a compact fireball” (La Scena Musicale), Sharon Lee gave her violin concerto debut at age ten. She is a recipient of the Ontario Arts Council’s Orford String Quartet Award and a 2024 Professional Development grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Sharon has served as Concertmaster and Contractor of the Toronto Concert Orchestra since 2014 and was recently named its Co-Artistic Director alongside her husband, Marcus Scholtes. She is also the Artistic Director of the Toronto Chamber Players and Music Director of the Korean Canadian Symphony Orchestra. Her passion for orchestral music was ignited by the New York String Orchestra, leading to her appointment as Principal Second Violin of the Thunder Bay Symphony at age 26. Previously, as a founding member of the Cecilia Quartet, Sharon performed globally and held fellowships at the Aspen Music Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Meisterkurse. Devoted to music of our time, she has performed in the world premieres of roughly 200 new works and collaborates with contemporary ensembles like Toy Piano Composers and Tapestry. She also performs original Prog Rock with the Dévah Quartet as a YAMAHA and D’Addario Canada Artist, and has backed legends such as Barbra Streisand and Earth, Wind & Fire. Sharon’s educational impact includes workshops with the Ontario String Association and projects with the Toronto District School Board. The final pupil of the late Professor Lorand Fenyves, she performed at his memorial concert and remains a dedicated mentor to the next generation of musicians.
