Karen Burke

Born in Brantford, Ontario, Karen Burke is a visionary conductor, educator, and composer who has profoundly shaped the landscape of Canadian gospel music. After developing a passion for choral conducting at McMaster University, where she earned her Bachelor of Music, she furthered her credentials with an A.R.C.T. Diploma in Piano Teaching and a Master of Education. An Associate Professor at York University, Burke’s distinguished academic career included serving as the Chair of the Music Department and founding the acclaimed York University Gospel Choir. Her professional journey took a definitive turn in 1988 when she and her husband, Oswald Burke, co-founded the Toronto Mass Choir. Together, they began steering the creative direction behind the ensemble’s fifteen (15) recordings.  Karen has written numerous original compositions and arrangements that celebrate the Canadian gospel music identity. Beyond her leadership of the choir and her work through Burke Music Inc., Burke is a highly sought-after clinician and adjudicator. She has shared her expertise through workshops at the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Massey Hall, and international music festivals and served as an artist-in-residence at several Canadian universities to mentor the next generation of musicians. Her commitment to fostering an environment where gospel music can be authentically created and recorded has made her a pivotal figure in the arts community. Whether conducting on the world stage or teaching in the classroom, Karen Burke continues to inspire through her dedication to musical excellence and cultural diversity, ensuring that the transformative power of choral music reaches audiences far and wide.
